| After a month-long work trip in Xishuangbanna in Spring 2025, we want to share another piece of Xishuangbanna tea culture!
| This time, we would like to talk about Laobanzhang (老班章), a famous tea village with one of the most demanding teas in Xishuangbanna Autonomous Prefecture (西双版纳). Until early 2000s, the Laobanzhang was virtually unknown and very poor village with remote access from Menghai. Yet, after more than twenty years, it becomes a little town in the jungle with large villas, sophisticated infrastructure and well-developed tea tourism.
| To date, the Laobanzhang can be only visited upon the personal invitation from the farmer (currently 188 families) and any visitor needs to follow several rules to ensure the control of quality. While the demand and prices of Laobanzhang tea are growing to astronomical heights, it is the specific mellow taste and amount energy that makes these teas so fascinating.
| What is behind the Laobanzhang development? How does tea from Laobanzhang taste? And what are the current challenges for Laobanzhang as well as other tea villages in the future? During the presentation, we will compare insight from Huang's family (farmer No. 007) and Laobanzhang tea expert Zheng, who significantly raised the awareness and recorded the gradual development of this village since 2004.
