| After a month-long work trip in Xishuangbanna in Spring 2025, we want to share another piece of Xishuangbanna tea culture!
| This time, we would like to talk about Dai teaware (Daitao 傣淘), a local hand-made pottery in Xishuangbanna Autonomous Prefecture (西双版纳). The history of this pottery can be traced to the Dai Kingdom (1180-1993*), where various containers (particularly for food and liquids) and rough clay jugs for roasting the tea (烤茶罐Kaochaguan) were produced.
| Until the late 1990s, the Dai teaware was virtually unknown. Yet, thanks to modernization of the Dai pottery workshops and raising the public awareness by adding the Dai pottery on the UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage in 2006, many potters were able to innovate and introduce new types of ceramics, including various gaiwans and tea pots.
| What is behind the growing popularity? How does tea from Dai teaware taste? And what are the current challenges of the Dai workshops? During the presentation, we will look at three different Dai workshops and taste some puer tea (sheng and shu) to better understand the difference between tea porcelain and Dai teaware.
